For numerous organisations data is a critically important necessity for their functions. However, if the data is not appropriately obtained and dealt with, it may have serious negative impact. So, any significant data needs suitable management and governance. This needs to be dealt with by persons in a variety of roles, both technical management such as the Head of Information Systems, and senior business management, e.g., the Chief Data Officer. And they in turn must advise, monitor, and manage relevant staff members’ handling data in the course of their work. Data governance and management must also cover all relevant ethical and legal obligations, in particular, protection of personal data.
